Listed @ $1,495,000

Built in 1940, this spacious Mediterranean is situated on a large lot overlooking the Estuary, complete with a private deep water berth and pier. Located in the sought after East End of Alameda, this exceptional property also boasts the potential to build a second home due to the zoning. This multi-level home offers 4 spacious bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, formal living and dining rooms and an additional guest suite, or family room, that overlooks the backyard and water.

The exterior of the home is stucco with a terracotta tile roof at the front of the home and a Juliette balcony overlooking the tree-lined street. The home is set back from the street, and offers a side entrance that facilitates additional privacy. The covered front porch leads up to the original front door that features a classic speakeasy. Once inside, arched openings frame the entrances that lead to the formal living room on the left and the formal dining room on the right. The staircases for both upstairs and downstairs are also located in the main foyer leading to the multiple levels throughout this spacious home.

The formal living room is a sun-filled room with large windows, coved ceilings, a Spanish style fireplace and built-ins. The formal dining room, has large, almost floor to ceiling windows and leads into the eat-in kitchen. The eat-in kitchen is bright and sunny with windows that provide sun-soaked vistas of the water and French doors that allow easy access to the fabulous backyard. The kitchen is ready to be transformed into a magnificent showpiece kitchen with it’s outstanding access and views of the backyard and water.

The expansive backyard includes a spacious lawn, DCG patio, raised veggie garden beds, grapevines, a redwood tree and direct access to the Estuary via the property’s deep water boat dock. Across the Estuary from the home is the Tidewater Boating Center in Oakland, and to the right of the boating center the East Bay Regional Parks has plans to develop 8 acres of new parkland to this Regional Shoreline area, eventually providing views of this park from the backyard.

The second level of the home features two bedrooms on either end of the hallway with a full bathroom conveniently located in between. The front bedroom has French doors that open to an enchanting Juliet balcony with views of the foliage of Fernside and surrounding beautiful homes; a charming feature that also complements the decorative façade of the home.

The large master bedroom is truly exceptional, with a large closet, picture rails and a private sunroom with expansive views of the backyard, Estuary and Oakland hills. The sunroom is ideal for a home office, sitting area, or even a nursery. The updated bathroom is conveniently situated between these two bedrooms, and has a shower, bath, marble top vanity, new light fixtures and a ceramic hex-tile floor.

Recently installed Berber-style carpeting graces the stairs and floors of the next level, which features two more bedrooms. The largest bedroom has two closets and oversized windows that overlook the backyard and water. The fourth bedroom, located across the hall, is also perfect for a nursery or home office.

The vast lower level of the home includes an attached garage, a large laundry room, big enough to also function as an arts and crafts or hobby space, and an additional guest suite overlooking the backyard, with an updated full bathroom en suite. This private area has its own door to the backyard, which makes it an ideal space for guests, in-laws, an au-pair, or even as a family room.

This spacious East End home has a sense of history and boundless charm. The neighborhood is conveniently close to top rated Alameda public schools, including Edison Elementary and Lincoln Middle School, as well as the famous Christmas Tree Lane and Lincoln Park, with a pool, tennis courts, bocce ball courts, baseball fields and basketball courts. It is also close to downtown Park Street and South Shore beach. Nearby to the High Street and Bay Farm bridges, this location offers easy access to a variety of public transportation options, including the SF Ferry, 880 and BART. The home itself is surrounded by many elegant, vintage homes with loads of character, mature trees and landscaping, perfect for enjoying the scenery on early-morning jogs or evening strolls. This is Alameda at its very best!

Neighborhood

Alameda

“Alameda was once a peninsula connected to the Oakland docks. In 1902, a canal was dredged to enable easier shipping access, and that turned Alameda into an island. A little off the beaten track, Alameda has a laid-back vibe all its own. Despite its 80,000 residents, there’s still a small-town feeling in Alameda.

A 4th of July Parade, complete with horse-drawn carriages, embodies the small-town feel in Alameda, which has preserved much of its Victorian housing stock, cottages, and central, walkable shopping district along Park Street. The Alameda Theater on Park Street was restored to its art deco glory. Civic pride runs high here; formerly the Carnegie Library, the Alameda Free Library was transformed into a multimillion-dollar showplace that earned a Silver LEED certification. Kids play soccer on former parade grounds of the converted army barracks. Crown Memorial State Beach and Shoreline Drive attract wind surfers.

With more than 10,000 buildings constructed before 1930, there is a rich and varied architectural heritage in the area playing a role in Alameda’s real estate market conditions. Historic Queen Anne’s, more than 1,500 ornately decorated Victorians, and California Craftsmans are some of the most desirable homes here along its tree-lined streets. “
